Bike rake maker Yakima merges with Kemflo

The best known bicycle rack maker, Yakima, has merged their operations with a privately held company out of Taiwan called Kemflo. They have been supplying Yakima with parts over the past nine year, with the merger deal being in the works for the past nine months. Yakima was previously owned by the private venture Arcapita, but will become a subsidiary of Kemflo and will operate independently.

So who is Kemflo? Well they’re a manufacturer of consumer goods from electronics products to water filtration devices based out of Taiwan. This new merger should not effect the retail operations of Yakima or their management staff and manufacturing operations around the world.

MIT team’s new bike wheel debuted in Copenhagen

A team of scientist from MIT debuted a new bicycle wheel at the UN Climate Summit in Copenhagen. They claimed to have reinvented the bicycle wheel, and that their new design will boost a riders power, fitness and help fight smog and traffic as well. Their new wheel is a hub containing a motor and batteries that can be fitted to the rear wheel of virtually any bicycle.

Bike charities see drop in donations

The economy has hit everyone very hard, and when people have less money for bills and for savings, then they have less to give to charities. That’s the case with many charities around the nation, well for the first time in over thirty years, the Pan-Massachusetts Challenge has raised less money than a previous year.

The anti-cancer fundraiser charity donated a check to he Dana-Farber Cancer Institute for more than $30 million. That’s quite a bit of money, but the cycling charity usually donates more than that as they saw a 14 percent drop over last year. Found, Billy Starrr said, “I think it’s fairly well known that in tough times, philanthropy is the first thing that goes with a lot of people.”
